AMERICAN LIFE AQUIRES TIL DEBT DO US PART

AmericanLife TV Network has acquired the exclusive U.S. rights to Picture Box’s lifestyle series Til Debt Do Us Part.The series follows couples as they learn “how to get their lives back on track and on the road to financial freedom,” the network said. The 39-episode series will debut on AmericanLife Sunday, Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. (EST), then move to Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 1:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.

POPULAR PRESCHOOL SERIES LANDS WITH PBS

The preschool series NANALAN’ has been sold by Picture Box to PBS in the United States. The award-winning pre-school television series began airing on 10 PBS member stations July 8, with additional stations picking up the series this fall. The series follows three-year old Mona on her adventures at her Nana’s home. Together with her canine best friend Russell, Mona explores, discovers and learns what it’s like to be three and free. The seven year distribution deal with PBS will make the forty-one 30-minute episodes available to member stations across the country.

KITCHEN CRIMES FINDS A US HOME

Picture Box has sold the Canadian lifestyle series KITCHEN CRIMES to HGTV in the US. “HGTV is looking forward to bringing this exciting new addition to our lineup,” says Melissa Sykes, senior vice president of programming for HGTV. “The series takes a unique approach to kitchen design, combining problem solving with a sense of humor and adventure. We’re sure our viewers will enjoy it.”

Picture Box takes an unprecedented five new factual series to MIP. “We’ve had a solid build on the factual side of our catalogue for the last couple of years, but this year we’ve really outdone ourselves.” says Director of International Sales Marilyn Kynaston. Picture Box has sold 65 episodes of the pre-school series THIS IS DANIEL COOK to Disney Channel Germany. With a purchase of 65 x 6 minute episodes, this sale has proven that live action pre-school series can work when dubbed. The series is to launch in June 2006.

ROLL PLAY FINDS A FRENCH CANADIAN PARTNER

Picture Box has secured a pre-sale from SRC in French Canada for the new preschool series from Sinking Ship Productions – ROLL PLAY. A new exercise show for preschoolers, this series combines the art of pretend and physical fitness to encourage young viewers to actively participate. Commissioned by Treehouse TV in English Canada, the show will now count the SRC as one of their production partners, thanks to Picture Box.

NEW CATALOGUE INCLUDES NEW LIFESTYLE

Picture Box heads off to MIPCOM this year with three new lifestyle series in their growing catalogue. The first is STYLE BY JURY (52 X 30’), one of the highest rated series on Canadian broadcaster W Network. The series focuses on making the best first impression possible, and follows makeover candidates over the course of seven days as they are transformed from the inside out. KITCHEN CRIMES (13 X 30’) is an exciting new series that blends forensics and design. Public health inspector, Rob Mancini, and interior designer, Marina Hildebrand, provide their expertise to identify “crimes” homeowners commit in their kitchens. They analyze their findings in the Kitchen Crimes Unit Lab and provide solutions – including $5000 of renovations - to make the kitchen cleaner, safer and more functional. PINK PLANET (13 X 30’) is a global search for gay and lesbian culture. It takes the viewer on an up-close and personal journey to gay festivals, events and celebrations around the world. Host Bill Mantas takes the viewer from a nude beach in Hawaii to a gay rodeo in Calgary, Canada.

Part workout, part puppet show extravaganza, ROLL PLAY gets kids to jump up, do a little jig, swim like a whale, laugh like a hyena and explode like a volcano – arming them with the lifelong knowledge that “exercising” is not a dirty word but an opportunity to play and explore. Designed in consultation with educational advisors, ROLL PLAY allows for various levels of preschool agility and comprehension and encourages children to use their bodies to tell imaginative stories, all the while becoming more active.

SERIES + BUYS ROBSON ARMS

Picture Box is happy to announce that the Canadian broadcaster Series + has bought the new dramedy series ROBSON ARMS for French Canada. The French broadcaster will be dubbing the current 13 X 30’ episode series into the French language in Montreal this fall, and will launch the program in the New Year. Picture Box expects further sales in other French-language territories to follow, as there has already been considerable interest in the series in those territories.

May 05: DANIEL COOK GOES STATESIDE
Picture Box is happy to announce the recent sale of THIS IS DANIEL COOK to Disney Playhouse in the US. The series will begin airing Monday to Friday inside Playhouse’s Breakfast with Bear block in June, 2005. “We are happy to see Disney Channel join our Canadian broadcast partners Treehouse TV, TVOntario, Knowledge Network, ACCESS and SCN in supporting the series”, says Kate Sanagan, Director of North American Sales at Picture Box. “It’s a good indication of the show’s value in the preschool market. Preschoolers rarely get the chance to see themselves on TV, and THIS IS DANIEL COOK gives them that unique opportunity.”

March 05: ADDING CANCON TO THE MIX
In response the substantial need for more Canadian content by its buyers, Picture Box has picked up additional titles for Canada only. New additions include the well-loved cooking series URBAN PEASANT (650 X 30’), and two new documentaries: ANNIE ONG and HOW TO BE A MODEL.

February 05: EDGEMONT SELLS TO THE US
Picture Box Distribution's Canadian teen series Edgemont has been licensed to Starz Encore in the U.S. for its tween/teen channel WAM! WAM! has taken all four seasons of the series, which follows the coming-of-age trials and tribulations of a group of teenagers. "Edgemont is one of those teen shows that really connects with its viewers," said Kate Sanagan, the director of North American sales at Picture Box. "It has a very strong fan following domestically and internationally, and we are confident it will find additional success with Starz."

December 04 - COOKWORKS picked up in UK and Africa
Picture Box cooking series THE COOKWORKS has been picked up by the DISCOVERY TRAVEL AND ADVENTURE channel in the UK and BBC FOOD for Africa. The series continues to impress buyers and audiences with its great look (80% shot on 35mm) and charming chef and host Donna Dooher.

November 04 - DOC Sales To French Canada
Two of Picture Box’s documentaries have been sold to French Canada. WEBCAM GIRLS sold to Canal Vie and TEAM SPIRIT to Canal D, respectively. Both programs have also garnered a lot of international interest with WEBCAM GIRLS selling to Australia (SBS) and Brazil (Globosat).

October 04 -MIPCOM Bounces Back
After a few years of quieter markets, this year’s MIPCOM was considerably hectic for Picture Box. Participation numbers were substantially higher and broadcasters seemed back in the mood for buying. “We were overwhelmed at the activity at the market and the response to some of our new shows in particular. There was a definite improvement in both attendance numbers and willingness to spend money.” Three of Picture Box’s children’s and youth programs were also part of MIPCOM Junior this year – Edgemont, This Is Daniel Cook, and Nanalan’.

September 04 - New HD Preschool Series for Picturebox
Picture Box is happy to announce their newest preschool acquisition – NANALAN’ (41 X 30, 62 X 15). This endearing new series follows a delightful three-year-old girl named Mona on her exciting adventures at her Nana's house. Together with her best friend Russell the dog, Mona explores, discovers and learns what it's like to be three and free. “We are excited to add NANALAN’ to our growing repertoire of high-quality children’s programming” says Kate Sanagan, Director of North American Sales. Picture Box will be launching the series to the international market at MIPCOM Junior this fall. Already on board is R&R Licensing, who will handle the international merchandising and licensing for the program.

August 2004 - New Children’s Show Launches This Fall
As reported earlier this year, Picture Box is happy to be representing the new children’s program THIS IS DANIEL COOK to the world. Hosted by a charismatic 6 year-old, this magazine-style series will be debuting on Treehouse in English Canada this fall. Picture Box will also be launching the series at MIPCOM Junior in October and anticipates a good response The series has already received much international and domestic interest, for possible acquisitions and format sales.

July 2004 - EDGEMONT Continues to Sell the World
France 2 and French Canada’s VRAK have come on board for the fifth season of this CBC teen program. In addition, all five seasons have been bought by SVT in Sweden. In South Korea we recently sold English-as-a-foreign-language rights for the first season. These rights will see a CD of the program distributed to young students learning English.

June 2004 - The BANFF FESTIVAL Toughs it Out
“The reduced festival attendance didn’t seem to have a negative effect on our business”, says Picture Box’s Marilyn Kynaston. “We still had many fruitful meetings with producers and broadcasters.” The most exciting new acquisition? “We’re repping a wonderful new series called SOMETHING ABOUT from The Idea Factory in Edmonton. It’s in development with Movie Central and we are looking for pre-sales. The series, formatted in 2, 3, 5 and 30 minute segments, tells us “something about” all sorts of movie related topics such as kung fu or ghosts.

May 2004 - PICTURE BOX Answers the Call for Cancon
Canadian broadcasters are always on the look-out for quality Canadian programming, especially when they need to fill their Canadian content requirements. Picture Box has helped fill some of those holes lately, with the representation of the Canadian series THE GARDENER’S JOURNAL (produced by S&S Productions). Both Knowledge Network and Access CLT have recently picked up second windows on the program, and Picture Box believes there will be additional interest in the show.

April 2004 - HOTDOCS Continues To Grow
This year’s documentary festival in Toronto proved to be a great success for the growing documentary market in Canada and the US. “The sales/distribution focus in the festival is really growing.” says Picture Box’s Kate Sanagan, “The organizers do a great job providing an opportunity for producers and distributors to connect.” Picture Box itself continues to add new docs to its slate – TEAM FOR PEACE, TEAM SPIRIT and WEBCAM GIRLS are all new programs for the company.

March 2004 - New Titles for PICTURE BOX

January 2004 - Start Your Engines!
Picture Box has signed an agreement with notable producers Screen Siren Pictures to pre-sell their 4 X 60’ documentary series GIRL RACERS in the US. The series has been commissioned by Global TV in Canada, and will follow the top 7 female race car drivers as they battle it out for pole position, head-to-head with their male counterparts over the course of the 2004 racing season.  Before they cross the finish line, this small group of fast, fearless women must overcome the skepticism of many fans and media alike who refuse to believe that women have the ability to drive competitively and attract the sponsorship dollars so vital to following their passion. Picture Box is seeking a US broadcast partner.

December 2003 - Asia Television Forum
Picture Box presents the newly expanded library of programs to buyers in Singapore this December at the Asia Television Forum (ATF), the largest event of its kind in Asia. Broadcasters, producers and distributors meet to pitch programs, form business relationships and discuss what’s hot on this side of the globe.

November 2003 - Garden Programming with a Difference
RECREATING EDEN is unlike how-to garden shows – it focuses on the creators of the gardens. This biographical documentary series illustrates, with vivid images, the wonderful stories of the featured gardeners and their relationships with the things of the earth. Episodes take place in six different countries, and offer inspiring, original perspectives on life and the world we live in.

November 2003 - A Brand New Partnership
A Partnership between Marilyn Kynaston, President of Picture Box Distribution, and distributor Kate Sanagan of Toronto has been finalized. Kate is our new Director of North American Programming, and Marilyn the Director of International Programming. Kate brings vast experience in the industry and good relationships with North American broadcasters to her new position, and allows Marilyn to focus on her major field of expertise – world markets.

November 2003 - Entrepreneur Award
Picture Box Distribution Director of International Sales Marilyn Kynaston is the overall winner of the Inspiration Entrepreneur of the Year Award for 2003. Marilyn was awarded this honour on Wednesday October 15, 2003 at an event sponsored by the B.C. Urban Entrepreneur Development Association in participation with HRDC, CIBC, Vancouver Agreement and Business in Vancouver.

October 2003 - Jazzing Up the Catalogue
Picture Box is proud to represent a very unique documentary on jazz legend Linton Garner. It is an intimate hour with some giants of jazz, as they prepare for a concert honouring Linton’s famous brother, the late Errol Garner. LINTON GARNER: I NEVER SAID GOODBYE is also a final visit with this celebrated musician – sadly, he passed away shortly after the completion of the program.

September 2003 - New Assistant Joins Picture Box.
The past year has seen a tremendous growth in the programming and sales at Picture Box, so the time is right to have an assistant on hand to ease the workload. Lillian Starr joined the Vancouver office in early September, working to assist Director Marilyn Kynaston with the everyday operations of the company. Having worked with Marilyn once before, Lillian is thrilled with the opportunity to learn what’s what in the business and to be a part of Picture Box’s exciting future.

August 2003 - A New Cooking Show and an Enlightening Documentary Series
Two new programs were added to the Picture Box catalogue in August, 2003. The critically acclaimed teen drama EDGMONT is proving to be a popular series in French speaking territories as sales are concluded to both France (France 2) and Quebec (VRAK). Ratings in France for Edgemont this summer were better than shares for LIZZIE MACGUIRE, broadcast just before, or than FRIENDS broadcast after. EDGEMONT therefore was first in its target demographic.

THE DINOSAUR HUNTER sells into Yugoslavia, Asia, and Mexico. Family movies are seeing a resurgence in 2002 after the events on 9/11 and THE DINOSUAR HUNTER represents all of those sought after qualities: hope, trust and friendship.

February 2002 - KRISTIN KREUK's star is rising
EDGEMONT lead Kristin Kreuk (Laurel) who also plays Lana Lang on WB's SMALLVILLE, is fast becoming a star in the U.S. and Canada. In recent months she has graced the covers of some US magazines, including YM and Rolling Stone. The young star seems unaffected by her new found stardom. She will continue with her role of Laurel on EDGEMONT in the fourth season to be taped in the fall of 2002.

January 2002 - Tough times at NATPE
There was no denying NATPE attendance was considerably down in '02. Picture Box principal Marilyn Kynaston notes, "NATPE was definitely strange this year, but it was bound to be after what has happened and we won't really know about the future of this market until 2003 in New Orleans."

Picture Box makes its first appearance at the Asia Television Forum in Singapore, Dec 4th-7th. Marilyn Kynaston points out "As many Asian buyers do not attend the markets in France and the U.S., the ATF is the perfect opportunity for Picture Box to make good on its promise to producers - to sell the whole world."

October 2001 - Lonely Planet meets Jackass meets Kids
Indio Pictures and Picture Box sign a deal for teen factual program DUMB IDEA. Each episode is a delicate balance of road trip documentary, skate youth culture and anarchy. Each show has a couple of skate-centric segments, several "prank" segments, one music and/or industry spotlight and a few short animations. All of it is fast and out of control. Indio Pictures have a pilot and hope to go into production in summer '02.

September 2001 - Off to Market

Water Street Releasing has engaged the services of Picture Box President Marilyn Kynaston for the distribution of its 39 part teen series EDGEMONT. Executive Producer Michael Chechik notes "We're looking forward to a fruitful relationship with Marilyn. She has the expertise in youth programming to ensure EDGEMONT has maximum international exposure".

August 2001 - It Won't Hurt. Promise!
Picture Box signs deal with Max Flex Television Productions to represent children's factual program PAINLESS SCIENCE. Jeff Barringer, Max Flex co-owner and Painless Science producer says "It is refreshing to have a sales agent with as much enthusiasm for the show as we have. That way moving forward with the series becomes a true partnership."

August 2001 - EDGEMONT Lead Bright Light in USA
EDGEMONT star Kristin Kreuk ('Laurel') plays the lead in Snow White on CBS this fall and also has a leading role in WB's Smallville.

July 2001 - Making Us Look Good
Picture Box is working with Mindsablaze Visual Communications on corporate identity, communications strategy and promotional collateral. Among the projects recently completed with Mindsablaze were this website, the Picture Box logo, business cards, stationery, two sided glossy one sheets, promotional stickers and a very handy identity manual.
